Definition
Permeation grouting, also termed pressure grouting or cement grouting, is used to fill voids or cracks in the soil and rocks. It also permeates coarse, granular soils with flowable particulate grouts to create a tight and strong mass. Some of its applications include underpinning foundations, providing excavation support, obstructing groundwater flow, and stabilizing and strengthening granular soils.
Types
Let us look at the three types of permeation grouting.
Compaction Grouting
Compaction grouting involves injecting low slump, mortar grout to densify and reinforce soil or to fill subsurface voids. It is used to reduce liquefaction potential, increase bearing capacity, and reduce settlement.
Fracture Grouting
This process comprises injecting cement slurry grout, creating lenses, and hydrofracturing soil. Applications include re-leveling structures and stabilizing overlying structures.
Jet Grouting
The jet grouting technique comprises the use of high-velocity fluid jets to build cemented soils of various types of shapes. Some of the applications of jet grouting include underpinning foundations, sealing the bottom of planned excavations, and providing excavation support.
